MainStreet Minute: Jan 2025

by Becca Eza, MainStreet Executive Director

Happy New Year from MainStreet Truth or Consequences!

We’re kicking off the year with a new round of trash can painting downtown. Last fall we asked for proposals from local volunteers who wished to adopt and paint a downtown trash can. In December a committee of representatives from MainStreet, the Arts Council, downtown business owners, and the City met to select the art that would be painted on trash cans. Artists will be painting the cans in January, leading up to a big reveal on January 25.

This trash can reveal will happen at a downtown clean-up on Saturday, January 25. Please mark your calendars and come join us at 9 am at Healing Waters Plaza. We’ll introduce the trash can artists, give a brief information and safety talk, and then volunteers will spread out around town with trash bags and litter grabbers to clean up our streets! We’ll meet back at Healing Waters Plaza at 11 am to see how much trash we’ve collected and give out some raffle prizes - each volunteer will receive a raffle ticket for prizes donated by local businesses. Thanks to these businesses who have donated prizes already, as of the writing of this article: Riverbend Hot Springs, Sierra Grande, ZIA Gallery, Morning Star Outfitters, Outer Edge Pizzeria, The Charles Motel and Hot Springs, Hot Springs Glamp Camp, A Touch of Yesterday, CHF Thrift Store, Wildflower Boutique, Angel Remnants, Galactic Digs, T or C Brewing Co., Mile Marker 7 Coffee, and Mile Marker 7 Boutique.

We have a couple of other projects in the works for February. We will be hosting the New Mexico Poet Laureate for a community poetry workshop, part of the New Mexico Epic Poem Project, tentatively scheduled for February 13 at Ingo’s Art Cafe, but details still TBD. This will be a collaborative project that will result in a poem written about T or C, by the people of T or C, which will be part of a state-wide exhibition and possibly part of a book.

We’re also working on a Valentine’s Day business promotion to encourage you to shop local. Similar to our Small Business Saturday promotion in November, this event encourages folks to support Sierra County small businesses. Details are still in the works, but from February 1 to February 13, you’ll be able to exchange your receipts from any Sierra County small business for raffle tickets, for a chance to win a bouquet of flowers and gift cards to local businesses.  Follow our Facebook page for details, to be announced soon!

Don’t forget, the second Saturday of EVERY month is Art Hop! Come downtown from 6-9 pm for a festive evening. You’ll find live music in several galleries, refreshments, art openings, and evening shopping. It’s a great opportunity for an evening out on the town!

If you want to hear more about what we are doing, or want to get involved by volunteering on one of our projects, please follow our Facebook page (MainStreet Truth or Consequences), visit our website (www.torcmainstreet.org), email director@torcmainstreet.org or stop by our office, 308 S.
