Greetings from downtown T or C!
We asked our community to show some love to small businesses this Valentine’s season. From February 1-13, receipts from any purchase at any Sierra County small business could be shown at either Rebel Roadrunner (413 N. Broadway) or Serenity (149 S. Date) to receive a raffle ticket. On February 14 we drew three lucky winners, who each received a Valentine’s bouquet with some gift cards from local businesses. Congrats to our winners, Christie, Brittany, and Greta!
And thank you to everyone who shopped small and kept dollars in our community - we recorded nearly $3,000 of receipts shown for raffle tickets!
On February 13 we welcomed the New Mexico Poet Laureate, Lauren Camp, who hosted a community poetry workshop, part of the New Mexico Epic Poem Project. The event, held at the 420 Event Space beside Ingo's Art Cafe, was free and open to everyone. Nearly 40 community members attended. Lauren led a discussion about poetry, held an open mic component, and engaged the audience in a writing exercise. The words written at the workshop will become part of a collaborative project that will result in a poem written about T or C, by the people of T or C. Thanks to Shennoah Bree, Ingo's Art Cafe, and the Black Cat Poets for their organization and support of this event!
Our trash can transformations continue. Several volunteer local artists have been doing an amazing job of “adopting” and painting a can to brighten the downtown district. Take a stroll downtown and find the newly painted cans! There are three on Main, three on Broadway, and two at Healing Waters Plaza (and while at the plaza, check out the new sculpture just installed by the Sierra County Arts Council!)
Thanks to everyone who came out and helped with our litter clean-up on January 25. We had 47 volunteers who collected a total of 660 pounds of trash! If you missed it, mark your calendar for our next litter clean-up - April 26, the weekend before Fiesta.
We will be having a competition for youth artists to design a sign with a positive anti-litter message. The winning designs will be printed on 12 x 18 metal signs and posted around downtown and in the parks. Entries will be accepted throughout March. Details are still in the works and will be announced soon. See the end of this column for ways to stay up-to-date on this project and other MainStreet news and events.
